The AMA Supercross Story
Supercross is a sport that has captured the imagination of Americans and is rapidly replacing other sports as the “in place” to go for some racing excitement. The AMA Supercross story is a tale of American adaptability and skilful biking in sometimes wild off-road conditions. Supercross in fact evolved from the European motorcycle sport of Motocross. Coming originally from Europe, ‘Moto-cross’ is a French word that conjoins ‘motorcycle’ with ‘cross country’. It makes sense right? Motocross was huge in Western Europe in the 50’s & 60’s, with races being held in rural environments involving tens of bikers all eager to prove their worth on steep hills, natural berms and death defying jumps. The motocross trials of today are speedy affairs, run over larger areas than their American equivalent, which are held in stadiums, not country fields, in order that you, the supercross fan, can make the track and be there for the race.
